1. Overview

VoxStar (“we”, “our”, “us”) is a speech and debate practice app intended for users aged 13 and older. Users who indicate they are under 13 during onboarding may use VoxStar only with verifiable parental consent, in accordance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

Sign-in is optional. You can use VoxStar without creating an account. If you choose to sign in, you may use Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In; we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from that provider. For users under 13, a parent or guardian must provide consent before any account is created (see Section 3).

Audio Recordings

When you use practice modes, the app records your speech. You can choose between two transcription methods:

  • Cloud AI (Pro): Recordings are sent to our server, which forwards them to Groq for transcription using an open-source Whisper model (whisper-large-v3). Our server holds the audio only in memory during the request and does not persist it. Per Groq’s Privacy Policy, API audio is not used to train models and is not retained beyond the time needed to process the request.
  • On-Device: Audio is processed entirely on your device using your platform’s built-in speech recognition (Apple Speech Recognition on iOS, Google Speech Services on Android). No audio data leaves your device.

Practice History

We store your practice session results (mode, topic, score, duration) locally on your device using AsyncStorage. This data is not transmitted to our servers.

Subscription Data

If you subscribe to VoxStar Pro, payment is processed by the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status. RevenueCat may collect anonymized purchase history and device identifiers. We do not have access to your payment details.

3. Children’s Privacy (COPPA)

VoxStar’s intended audience is users aged 13 and older. Where users indicate they are under 13 during onboarding, VoxStar requires verifiable parental consent before account creation, and we treat their information with the additional protections required by the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

  • We require parental consent before creating accounts for users under 13.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal information from children without parental consent.
  • When Cloud AI transcription is used, audio is forwarded to Groq for transcription only. Our servers do not store audio. Per Groq’s Privacy Policy, audio is not retained beyond request processing and is not used for model training.
  • Practice history is stored locally on the device, not on our servers.
  • We do not serve targeted advertising to any users.
  • Parents can request deletion of their child’s data at any time by using the “Delete Account” option in the app’s Profile screen or by contacting us.

4. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide speech and debate practice features
  • Transcribe your audio recordings into text for AI feedback
  • Manage your subscription status
  • Improve app performance and fix bugs (via anonymous error reports)
  • Authenticate your identity if you choose to sign in (Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In)

5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Google Sign-In — Authentication. Subject to Google’s Privacy Policy.
  • RevenueCat — Subscription management. Collects anonymized purchase and device data.
  • Groq — Cloud speech-to-text. When you choose Cloud AI transcription, your audio is sent to Groq’s hosted Whisper model. Audio is not retained by Groq beyond request processing and is not used for model training. Subject to Groq’s Privacy Policy.
  • Google Gemini API — AI feedback generation. After transcription, the resulting text (no audio) is sent to Google’s Gemini API for analysis and coaching feedback. Subject to the Gemini API Terms of Service; paid-tier requests are not used to train models.
  • Sentry — Error tracking and crash reporting. Collects anonymized error data, device type, and OS version. No personal information is included.
  • Apple App Store / Google Play Store — Payment processing for subscriptions. We do not have access to your payment information.
  • Firebase — Backend services and parental consent flow. Subject to Google’s Privacy Policy.

6. Data Retention

  • Audio recordings sent for Cloud AI transcription are not stored on our servers. Per Groq’s Privacy Policy, audio is not retained by Groq beyond request processing.
  • Practice history is stored locally on your device until you delete the app or your account.
  • Account information is retained until you delete your account.
  • Subscription data is managed by RevenueCat, Apple, and Google and is subject to their retention policies.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Delete your account — Use the “Delete Account” option in Profile. This removes all locally stored data.
  • Switch to on-device transcription — Prevents any audio from being sent to our servers.
  • Request information — Contact us to ask what data we hold about you.

8. Data Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit. Audio recordings are forwarded to Groq over encrypted connections and are not stored on our servers. You can switch to on-device transcription at any time to ensure no audio leaves your device.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
