Today’s Pulse rundown
Phoenix Heat
Transcript: What if your city offered free air conditioning to keep everyone safe? Officials in Maricopa County, Arizona, are fighting extreme summer temperatures by giving residents access to cooling centers. The county saw heat-related deaths decline from six hundred and forty-five in 2023 to four hundred and five in 2025. Yale University researcher Jennifer Marlon says the weather is worse now because nighttime temperatures are not cooling off. This lack of a break prevents our bodies from recovering from the heat of the day. How do you stay cool when the summer sun is blazing outside?
Sea Turtles
Transcript: Imagine walking eight kilometers in the dark just to guard a nest of eggs! In the Philippines, local patrollers and researchers from the Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute are working together to protect vulnerable olive ridley sea turtles. They rescue the eggs from stray dogs and move them to safe hatcheries in San Vicente. When the babies finally hatch, they race toward the West Philippine Sea. During this crawl, the turtles take a geomagnetic imprint, allowing them to return to the exact region where they were born years later. Would you volunteer to stay up late to protect baby animals?
3D Particle Camera
Transcript: How do you take a picture of something that is completely invisible? Researchers at ETH Zurich and EPFL have built a prototype detector to track invisible particles in three dimensions. Instead of using millions of tiny components, they use a single block of material paired with advanced camera technology. The system relies on a micro-lens array placed inside the detector. Each microscopic lens acts like a tiny camera recording from a slightly different angle, allowing the system to reconstruct a three-dimensional light field. If you had a camera that could see invisible things, where would you point it first?
Energy Drinks Ban
Transcript: Have you ever felt jittery after drinking a super sweet soda? Starting in April, England will officially ban the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children under sixteen. Shops and vending machines that break the rule could face fines of up to two thousand five hundred pounds. These drinks contain high levels of sugar and a stimulant called caffeine. While caffeine makes the body feel more alert, having too much of it can cause headaches and sleep problems for young people. What is your absolute favorite caffeine-free drink to have with your lunch at school?
TikTok AI Likeness
Transcript: What if a computer generated a video of you doing something you never actually did? TikTok is testing a new opt-in tool in the US that allows creators to scan for unauthorized artificial intelligence deepfakes. If the system finds a fake video using their face, the creator can report it. To use the tool, creators must first verify their identity with a company called Jumio. They provide a real-time selfie scan and an ID check so the system can accurately scan for content using their likeness. Do you think it is easy to spot a fake video online?
How Airplanes Stay in the Sky
Transcript: How much pressure can an airplane wing take before it completely snaps? Engineers at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center in California recently tested a new lightweight, fifteen-foot airplane wing. They wanted to see if the long, truss-braced design could help future commercial airliners save fuel. During the test, engineers intentionally bent the wing and used special sensors to track how the structure responded as forces increased. The wing finally broke at one hundred and twenty-seven percent of its design limit! Would you want to watch a giant machine break things on purpose in a laboratory?
Lower AC Bill
Transcript: Is your house blasting cold air all summer long? With temperatures reaching one hundred degrees Fahrenheit across the country, experts are sharing tips to lower your air conditioning bills. Simple changes can save you money without turning your home into a sauna. Lisa Purvins from Pro-Tech Heating and Cooling says regular maintenance is incredibly important. Dirty filters hinder airflow, causing the air conditioner to work harder and use more energy to push the cold air out into the room. Replacing that filter is a quick way to keep your cooling system running smoothly.
Mick Jagger AI
Transcript: Would you listen to a brand new song written entirely by a computer? The Rolling Stones recently released their twenty-seventh studio album. In a new interview with Billboard, legendary musicians Mick Jagger and Keith Richards shared their thoughts on artificial intelligence making music. Jagger says he obviously does not want to be imitated vocally or instrumentally by a machine. He believes that if someone wants to use artificial intelligence to make music, they need to have their own original input and thoughts. Do you think a robot could ever write a truly catchy pop melody?
If I Tell You Movie
Transcript: What would you do if you discovered the adults in your life were hiding a massive secret? Suncatcher Productions has acquired the rights to distribute a new family drama film called If I Tell You. The movie, directed by Tessa Blake, is set for a theatrical release this August. Based on a popular novel, the story follows a twelve-year-old boy attempting to solve a mystery. Through his eyes, the film explores the fragile space between certainty and mystery as he navigates the complicated adult world. What is your favorite mystery movie to watch on a rainy weekend?
EU Border / Dover
Transcript: Imagine sitting in your car for hours just trying to cross a border! The port of Dover in England is bracing for massive traffic delays this weekend. Officials expect up to ten thousand cars on Saturday as fourteen million drivers hit the road for the peak summer season. The chaos is tied to new European Union border controls. Software problems in the technology in France mean French border police must manually register non-EU travelers, causing long queues as they create a file for each visitor. What is the longest road trip you have ever taken with your family?
