Finland-Sweden Train

Transcript: What if you could travel across Europe on a single train route? A new passenger train just began running between Finland and Sweden. This creates the first rail connection between northern Finland and southern Europe in nearly 40 years! The double-decker train set off from Oulu, Finland, and made a 100-minute journey across the border. The route was originally suspended back in the 1980s because of low passenger numbers and technical differences in the tracks. Now, it makes it possible to travel around 5,000 kilometers by rail! Where would you go on a massive train trip?

Kazakhstan Tiger

Transcript: Imagine seeing a massive wild cat return to its historic home! On July 31, Kazakhstan released its first tiger into the wild in over 70 years. The adult female Amur tiger, named Umit, was released into the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve. The Kazakhstan government says she is fitted with a satellite tracking collar. The extinct Caspian tiger used to live there, but they went extinct owing to habitat loss and hunting by humans. Now, scientists hope Umit will help bring the species back to the region. What wild animal would you love to see in person?

Silver Nanocatalysts

Transcript: Get this β€” scientists just found a hidden switch inside tiny metal particles! Researchers at Seoul National University discovered that silver nanocatalysts can actually switch where they work. It all depends on whether a solid oxide cell is producing electricity or generating hydrogen. During electricity generation, reaction rates increased as the boundary length grew. But during hydrogen production, reaction rates increased with the surface area instead! The silver nanocatalysts alter the electronic structure to favor oxygen reduction. This discovery could help engineers design much better clean energy devices in the future. How do you think we will power our homes in fifty years?

GeoPT AI Physics

Transcript: What if a computer could learn how the real world feels? Researchers at MIT developed a new artificial intelligence approach called GeoPT. It helps AI models understand physics so they can simulate real-world scenarios more efficiently. GeoPT gives simulation models a sense of how physics works by virtually reenacting everyday mechanical interactions in 3D. It studied 1.3 million samples of tiny spheres moving and stopping on objects. Because of this training, the model reaches peak performance twice as fast! If you could build a virtual world, what rules of gravity would you change?

Bluesky Reposts

Transcript: Have you ever wanted to clean up your social media feed? The platform Bluesky just added a new feature that lets you hide reposts from individual users. If someone shares too many things, you can go to their profile, click the three dots, and select the option to hide them. What this means for you: It gives people more control over what they see online. Bluesky is also launching a beta feature to automatically add post numbers to long threads. Next time you scroll through an app, think about how the layout was designed!

Perseid Meteor Shower

Transcript: Are you ready to watch the sky light up with shooting stars? The famous Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12 into the next morning. NASA says viewers might see 50 to 100 meteors per hour! The Perseids are caused by the Earth passing through the trail of dust and particles left behind by an icy comet. Those little pieces of comet dust enter the atmosphere at 37 miles per second and heat up! Because it is a new moon, the dark skies will make the colorful streaks even easier to spot. Will you stay up late to watch the show?

Operation Ivy Logo

Transcript: Did you know a famous band logo might be inspired by a superhero? For years, fans speculated that the jumping man logo for the California band Operation Ivy was based on Spider-Man. Now, frontman Jesse Michaels has weighed in! What this means for you: Michaels posted on Instagram that it looks like he used a December 1987 Marvel Tales comic cover as a reference, though he doesn't remember for sure. The logo first appeared on their 1988 record. It shows how pop culture constantly remixes itself, with musicians drawing inspiration from the comic books they read growing up. If you were starting a punk rock band, what would your logo look like?

Lies of P Switch

Transcript: What if a classic fairy tale was turned into a challenging video game? The acclaimed game Lies of P just released on the Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this month! You play as Pinocchio in the city of Krat, which has been overtaken by murderous puppets. What this means for you: The new release includes the Overture expansion, giving players even more story to explore. The game earned an 88 percent Critics Recommend score on OpenCritic. High Street Rules

Transcript: Who gets to decide what kinds of stores open in your town? Local councils in the UK are getting new powers to stop betting and vape shops from taking over high streets. Andy Burnham announced the plans, which could be in place by 2027. Vape shops currently fall into the same planning category as regular shops, meaning they can open without needing a new planning application. The new rules will require them to get specific permission first. This gives communities a proper say about how their neighborhoods look. If you could design the perfect main street, what stores would you include?
